Santa Claus is coming to town! He’ll be in San Diego on vacation this summer! And he is very excited about the big centennial celebration at Balboa Park.
The Joyous and HiLarryous Production of “Santa’s Summer Vacation,” starring Santa Claus himself, will take place on Saturday, July 18, 2:30 pm in Balboa Park at the enchanted “Butterfly Garden” amphitheater. It is hosted by the Garden Theatre Festival, sponsored by the City of San Diego Park and Recreation Department, Senior Citizen Services and Therapeutic Recreation Services.
“Santa’s Summer Vacation” is an activity-packed show. Santa sings, tells stories and jokes, plays games and answers questions from the audience. As Santa says, “It’s sort of like a town hall meeting, just like what the politicians do, except I actually give more truthful answers, and we have a lot more fun.” The show puts the spotlight on the youngsters to create a memorable experience. This is a rare opportunity for children to meet Santa up close and personal

BEHIND THE SCENES:
The show was developed by Larry Carpenter, a professional Santa. Through his recent experiences as Santa, Larry realized that children had wonderful questions and wanted to find a way to answer them all.
Larry has deep San Diego roots. He graduated from USIU School of Performing Arts and appeared on stage at the Old Globe Theatre in several shows, most notably as Jesus in Godspell in 1975 (for which he won the Atlas Award for Best Actor) and he reprised that role at the Cassius Carter in the summer of 1976. He worked at the Broadway Dinner Theatre and was the Founder/Artistic Director for Twelfth Night Repertory Company.
